The World’s Fastest Elevator Has a Top Speed of 47 Miles per Hour

Image
When it opened in 2016, the Guangzhou CTF Financial Centre became the tallest building in the Chinese metropolis. It stretched 530 meters towards the sky, and featured 111 floors above ground and five below ground. But all people could talk about was the two super-fast Hitachi elevators capable of transporting passengers from the ground to the 95th floor in just 43 seconds. Hitachi installed a total of 95 elevators in the Guangzhou skyscraper, including 28 double-decker cars, 13 high-speed elevators, and 52 low and medium-speed elevators, but it was the two express elevators that would end up snatching the title of “world’s fastest elevators” that captured people’s imagination. The world’s fastest elevators lived up to the hype, reaching a top speed of up to 1,200 m/min (3,937 ft/min, or 44.7 mph/72 km/h). The previous record holder was a Toshiba elevator installed in the iconic Taipei 101 tower capable of reaching a top speed of 38 mph (61 km/h). How did Hitachi create the wor...

Russian Teen Band Uses Intercom Cameras to Record Performances and Go Viral Online

Image
Intercom camera videos are nothing new. They’ve been going viral online for years now, but they usually feature random events, from animals accidentally ringing doorbells to couriers throwing around fragile parcels, and various pranks. Because of their generally poor quality, intercom cameras aren’t usually a great choice for artistic performances, but that hasn’t stopped a group of Young Russians from using them to make a name for themselves online. 23rd Microdistrict is a musical group made up of tenth-graders from the 9th Lyceum high school in Orenburg, Russia. Since 2024, they’ve been going viral online with musical performances recorded on intercom cameras around the city. The system is simple: residents check their intercomm recordings and re-upload their live performances to social media, where they garner millions of views and thousands of comments. According to BFM.ru , in 2004, lead singer Arsenyi came up with the idea of recording his performances using random intercom ...
