Online Flea Market Bans the Sale of Ultrasound Photos to Prevent Pregnancy Fraud

Image
Mercari, Japan’s leading online flea market, decided to prevent the sale of ultrasound photos on its platform to prevent people from using them to commit pregnancy fraud. Selling ultrasound photos of unborn babies on a flea market app is strange, but Mercari never even considered taking action against the practice until one person noticed the high number of ultrasound pics and positive pregnancy tests listed on the platform and posted pictures of them on X (Twitter), asking other users what they thought about it. The post went viral, attracting hundreds of comments, most of which agreed that the two only logical answers were pranking or scamming someone into thinking they had gotten you pregnant. While the first one could be regarded as an innocent joke, the potential implications of pregnancy scamming recently led Mercari to ban the sale of such items on its online flea market. Angry Patron Sets Fire to Café Because They Had Run Out of Mayonnaise

Image
An angry café patron in Los Palacios y Villafranca, Spain, was recently arrested for allegedly setting fire to the eatery because the staff told him they had run out of mayonnaise. Last Wednesday, the staff and customers of a café in the municipality of Los Palacios y Villafranca, Seville, got the fright of their lives when a man sprayed petrol on the bar and set it on fire. The man, whose identity has not been revealed, went to the restaurant with his son and ordered two sandwiches. Surveillance cameras show him getting up from his table and talking to one of the waiters. The 50-something patron reportedly asked for mayonnaise for his sandwich, but was told that they didn’t have any. He then asked another waiter and was told the same thing, so he just stormed out of the café, walked to a nearby gas station, and came back with a bottle of petrol. Chinese Researchers Develop Innovative Self-Cleaning Glass

Image
Scientists at China’s Zhejiang University have developed a new type of thin, transparent glass that can clean itself with the help of built-in electrodes that create an electric field. Surface particle pollution has long been a problem that science has struggled to solve. From dirty windows in inaccessible places to photovoltaic panels in the middle of the desert, dealing with dust, sand, and other particles is often difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. But what if glass surfaces could simply clean themselves regularly? It sounds like the kind of technology you’d expect to see in a sci-fi blockbuster, but a team of researchers in China claims to have invented a type of self-cleaning glass that can remove up to 98% of surface particles in just a few seconds, without the use of water and chemicals. Afghanistan’s Unique Roof-Mounted Vehicle Cooling Units

Image
Because car AC units break down too often and repairs are too expensive, Afghan taxi drivers often turn to handmade roof-mounted rudimentary cooling units. Driving through Kandahar, Afghanistan’s second-largest city, you’re likely to see taxis with large rectangular boxes mounted on the roof and large tubes extending from them and into the cabin, through a rear window or through a hole cut into the roof. They are handmade cooling devices meant to replace the cars’ built-in air-conditioning systems, which tend to break down when they are most needed and cost a fortune to repair. Similar to industrial evaporative air cooling installations, these boxes can lower temperatures by 12 degrees Celsius through water evaporation, they are less noisy than air conditioning systems and consume way less power. They’re just not meant for vehicle installation. Read More from Oddity Central – Collecting Oddities https://ift.tt/foKHnuO

New Zealand woman arrested after 2-year-old girl found alive in suitcase stowed in bus luggage

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A New Zealand woman was arrested on a child neglect charge Sunday after a bus driver found a 2-year-old girl alive in a suitcase that was stowed in the vehicle’s luggage compartment, authorities said. The bus driver noticed movement inside the bag during a planned stop at the settlement of Kaiwaka, north of Auckland, after a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment, Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said in a statement. When the driver opened the suitcase they discovered the 2-year-old girl, who was very hot but otherwise appeared physically unharmed, Harrison said. The child was taken to a hospital, where she remained Sunday night local time. The arrested woman was charged with ill-treatment or neglect of a child and was due to appear in court Monday. She was not named by law enforcement. from Weird News | KETK.com | FOX51.com https://ift.tt/HgS7Vlr
