Houston firefighters rescue dog stranded on bridge pier in chilly water

HOUSTON (AP) — A dog has been reunited with its owner after being rescued by firefighters from the chilly waters of a Houston bayou. The little dog was spotted Friday stranded on a bridge pier in the Sims Bayou in southwest Houston by an employee of the Houston Botanic Garden. Houston firefighters were called, and a member of the department’s swift-water rescue team made his way to the pier. Video of the rescue shows that as the firefighter approached, the dog barked at him and nipped at his hands before jumping in the water. The firefighter eventually caught the dog and brought him safely to shore. Television station KHOU-11 reports the dog named Burbie was reunited with its owner on Saturday. from Weird News | KETK.com | FOX51.com https://ift.tt/Aj7hvb9

Japanese Man Has Been Relying on Strangers to Let Him Sleep Over for the Last Five Years

Image
A 33-year-old Japanese man has been getting a lot of attention for his ingenious way of putting a roof over his head – asking total strangers to let him sleep over. Shuraf Ishida has slept in over 500 different homes over the last five years. After quitting his job, he decided to sell all his belongings except for a few essentials that fit into his backpack and travel around Japan using his savings. Normally, accommodation would have ranked highest on his list of expenses, but the 33-year-old man found an ingenious way of putting a roof over his head for free. Every day, Ishida stands in crowded areas sometimes for hours at a time, holding up a sign that reads “Please Let Me Stay Over Tonight!” As weird as it sounds, he almost always finds someone willing to take him in, mostly lonely homeowners in need of someone to talk to. Japanese Company to Launch Human Washing Machine

Image
Osaka-based showerhead maker Science Co. has developed a cutting-edge washing machine for humans aptly named “Mirai Ningen Sentakuki” (Human Washing Machine of the Future). At the 1970 Osaka Kansai Expo, Japanese tech giant Sanyo Electric Co., now Panasonic Holdings Corp., launched the world’s first-ever human washing machine. Its futuristic egg shape and bubble technology captured people’s imagination and drew huge crowds to the manufacturer’s booth. Yasuaki Aoyama was one of the many people who got to see Sanyo’s washing machine in action. He was only a curious fourth-grader at the time, but the feeling of awe stuck with him all through adulthood, and today, as the chairman of Science Co., a company specializing in bathtubs and showerheads, he is preparing to launch his very own modern washing machine for humans. 15 years ago an unremarkable cave became home to a ‘horrifying’ urban legend

Image
Utah’s Nutty Putty Cave became the site of a horrific tragedy (Picture: Utah County Sheriff’s Office/ MUSEUM FACTS) 15 years ago, 26-year-old John Edward Jones went on a spelunking trip to Utah’s famous Nutty Putty cave totally unaware he was about to become an urban legend. On that very trip, Jones suffered ‘one of the most horrifying deaths imaginable’ when he became trapped upside-down in a terrifyingly small crevice. Jones’s body remains entombed inside the dark cave to this day – his death becoming a cautionary tale about the dangers of spelunking. This is the story of the Nutty Putty Cave Incident. John Edward Jones was an experienced spelunker who went on a caving trip with his brother (Picture: Jones Family Handout) The Nutty Putty cave Located around 55 miles outside of Salt Lake City, for years the Nutty Putty cave was a well-known tourist attraction and was widely regarded as a good ‘beginner cave’ for wannabe explorers. First discovered in 1960, the cave quick...

Stolen shoe mystery solved at Japanese kindergarten when security camera catches weasel in the act

TOKYO (AP) — Police thought a shoe thief was on the loose at a kindergarten in southwestern Japan, until a security camera caught the furry culprit in action. A weasel with a tiny shoe in its mouth was spotted on the video footage after police installed three cameras in the school in the prefecture of Fukuoka. “It’s great it turned out not to be a human being,” Deputy Police Chief Hiroaki Inada told The Associated Press Sunday. Teachers and parents had feared it could be a disturbed person with a shoe fetish. Japanese customarily take their shoes off before entering homes. The vanished shoes were all slip-ons the children wore indoors, stored in cubbyholes near the door. Weasels are known to stash items and people who keep weasels as pets give them toys so they can hide them. The weasel scattered shoes around and took 15 of them before police were called. Six more were taken the following day. The weasel returned Nov. 12 to steal one more shoe. That was when it got caught on camer...

'The Bear' has a mirror image: Chicago crowns lookalike winner for show's star Jeremy Allen White

CHICAGO (AP) — “The Bear” has a mirror image. More than 50 contestants turned out Saturday in a Chicago park to compete in a lookalike contest vying to portray actor Jeremy Allen White, star of the Chicago-based television series “The Bear.” Beyond the renown of being named White's unofficial body double, the winner walked away with $50 and a pack of cigarettes in recognition of the puff-prone character White plays in the series — Carmen “Carmy” Berzattoa — a young, award-winning chef from the glittery world of fine dining who returns to the Windy City to captain his family's dive sandwich shop. On the show, the character is sometimes referred to as the “Bear,” and the chef had dreams of owning a fine dining restaurant that would carry that name. As hundreds looked on and cheered, the prize went to 37-year-old mental health therapist Ben Shabad, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. “This is the coolest thing I’ve done all week,” said Shabad, who was hoisted into the air in the ...
