Instagram-famous squirrel named Peanut seized by New York state authorities

A New York man who turned a rescued squirrel into a social media star called Peanut is pleading with state authorities to return his beloved pet after they seized it during a raid that also yielded a raccoon named Fred. Multiple anonymous complaints about Peanut — also spelled P'Nut or PNUT — brought at least six officers from the state Department of Environmental Conservation to Mark Longo's home near the Pennsylvania border in rural Pine City on Wednesday, Longo said. “The DEC came to my house and raided my house without a search warrant to find a squirrel!” said Longo, who is 34. “I was treated as if I was a drug dealer and they were going for drugs and guns.” The officers left with Peanut, who amassed hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram, TikTok and other platforms during his seven years with Longo. They also took Fred, a more recent addition to the family. A spokesperson for the DEC said in a statement that the agency started an investigation after receiving...

British chef Jamie Oliver urges followers to help solve the 'grate cheese robbery'

LONDON (AP) — British chef Jamie Oliver is on the case of the stolen cheddar. Oliver, who rose to fame as “The Naked Chef" on TV by stripping food down to its essentials, got cheeky in an otherwise serious plea to his social media followers to help solve the mystery of the missing 22 metric tons (48,488 pounds) of award-winning cheddar worth 300,000 British pounds ($390,000) that was stolen in a scam. Calling it the “grate cheese robbery,” Oliver told his 10.5 million Instagram fans to be on the lookout for “lorry loads of very posh cheese.” Nearly 1,000 wheels of cloth-wrapped artisanal cheddar were swiped from Neal’s Yard Dairy by a con artist posing as a wholesale distributor for a major French retailer, the company said. The cheese was gone before the company realized it had been scammed and reported the theft Oct. 21. “If the deal seems too gouda to be true, it probably is! Let’s find these cheese stealers,” Oliver wrote. Cheddar, which is named for the village in southw...

A mutt known as 'Houdini' for his ability to elude capture is finally off the streets

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Dubbed on social media as the "Houdini” of New Orleans' Mid-City neighborhood, Scrim — a scruffy, mixed-breed dog that was on the lam for more than six months after escaping his yard — has finally been caught. The 13-pound (about six-kilogram) runaway was captured Wednesday night with the use of a tranquilizer dart. New Orleans news outlets report that he is missing a chunk out of his ear and has various abrasions. Also, X-rays revealed two projectiles — possibly small bullets or air rifle pellets — were lodged inside his little body. Veterinarian Dr. Mary Miller told The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate she couldn’t be positive what type of weapon had been used, since she decided to leave the projectiles embedded in the dog’s flesh. “We’re probably not going to remove them,” Miller said, “because they’re not going to cause an issue.” Despite his injuries, Miller said, Scrim's condition “wasn't awful.” Michelle Cheramie, owner of the nonpr...

Justice Department Eyes Google’s AI in Search Monopoly Case

Image
Google’s AI technology might be put in the spotlight as the Department of Justice decides on how to tackle the company’s monopoly in the search space. US District Judge Amit Mehta has been asked to give a view as to whether Google needs to hand over the details of its AI technology, Gemini, to be considered in this landmark antitrust case. The case centers upon what the DoJ has termed “pernicious” anticompetitive conduct from the technology giant; and the illegal monopoly that it was ruled to have in August. Paraglider Spots Stray Dog Chilling Atop Great Pyramid of Giza

Image
A man flying a paramotor over the Giza Pyramid Complex on the outskirts of Cairo spotted a stray dog barking at birds from atop the 138.5-meter-tall Great Pyramid of Giza. Marshall Mosher, a “pro adventure athlete” who travels around the world,  was flying his paramotor over the pyramids of Giza on October 14 when he came across a very peculiar sight – a lone canine chilling on top of the Great Pyramid, seemingly barking at the birds flying overhead. Not exactly the kind of thing you expect to see while flying over one of the Seven Wonders of the World, so it’s no wonder that the clip he posted on his Instagram went viral almost instantly. Some users of the popular social network joked that the pooch must have been the Egyptian God Anubis, while others were worried about its well-being.   Read More from Oddity Central – Collecting Oddities https://ift.tt/xtqEn2g

Survey: 9 in 10 Workers Think Managers Need ‘Firing’ Training

Image
More managers need training on how to fire their staff. That’s the headline figure revealed by a new survey of US workers looking into how companies dismiss employees and the affect it has on their mental health. A massive 92% of respondents said that giving managers more training in this aspect of their role would be beneficial, with two thirds of those who had been on the wrong side of a termination saying that the situation had been handled poorly. With so many tech companies laying off staff over the last two years, the survey also looked at the language used during the process, with the somewhat euphemistic “Letting you go” far and away the most used phrase. Flooding from seasonal rains threatens residents in northern Thailand, including elephants

BANGKOK (AP) — Flooding in northern Thailand forced many residents of the city of Chiang Mai and its outskirts to seek safety on higher ground on Friday, with members of the animal world under similar threat. Evacuations were underway at the Elephant Nature Park, which houses around 3,000 rescued animals, including 125 elephants, 800 dogs, 2,500 cats, 200 rabbits and 200 cows. Flood waters caused by heavy rainfall swept through the park on Thursday. Heavy seasonal monsoon rains and the effects of Typhoon Yagi combined to cause serious flooding in many parts of Thailand, with the northern region particularly badly hit. Video posted online by the park vividly illustrated that care and compassion are not solely human traits. The video shows several of the park’s resident elephants fleeing through rising, muddy water to ground less inundated. Three of them dash through the deluge with some ease but, according to the park, a fourth one is blind and was falling behind. It showed greate...

Tree Cut in Half in Neighborly Dispute Becomes Unlikely Tourist Attraction

Image
A bizarre-looking fir tree sliced in half during a neighborly dispute over bird droppings has become a popular tourist attraction with its own Google reviews in the Waterthorpe suburb of Sheffield, England. Three years ago, the now-famous half-cut fir tree of Waterhope made international news headlines for the first time. Located on the edge of Bharat Mistry’s property, it extended its evergreen crown on the driveway of Irene and Graham Lee. The birds nesting in the 25-year-old fir tree had become a nuisance to the Lee’s as they constantly had to clean their driveway of droppings. At first, the two parties involved tried to find an amicable solution, like trimming the branches or installing nets to prevent birds from nesting in it, but since no compromise was reached, the Lees took matters into their own hands and hired an arborist to cut the tree in half and remove its branches from their property. Photos of the odd-looking tree quickly went viral and the tree became a local tourist ...
