Japan’s ‘Most Frugal Woman’ Buys 3 Houses by Spending Only $1.4 Per Day on Food

Image
Saki Tamogami, a 37-year-old real-estate agent, is known as Japan’s most frugal woman for her commitment to spending as little money as possible on things like food, clothes, and self-care. “Never buy anything that isn’t on sale!” This has been Saki Tamogami’s motto for the last 15 years, and she claims it has helped her save enough money to buy three houses, a goal she set for herself when she was only 19 years old. The first thing she did was stop buying new clothes, instead accepting handouts from family and friends and taking better care of the clothes she already had. She then started cutting down on food expenses, relying mainly on cheap dishes like udon noodles, toast, and discounted radishes for sustenance. After 8 years of frugal living, Tamogami was able to buy her first home, and by 2019, she had already achieved her goal of owning three homes. Hundreds cruise Philadelphia streets in the 15th annual Philly Naked Bike Ride

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Hundreds of people in various states of undress cruised the streets of Philadelphia to cheers from onlookers Saturday evening in the 15th annual Philly Naked Bike Ride. The annual ride, which started in 2009, is billed as promoting cycling as a key form of transportation and fuel-conscious consumption. It is also meant to encourage body positivity. Organizers stress, however, that participants aren’t required to ride completely in the buff, telling them to get “as bare as you dare.” Organizers said the ride wasn’t limited only to bicycles but welcomed “all forms of human-powered transportation” such as rollerblades or skates, skateboards and scooters. They also point to a code of conduct that bars any kind of physical or sexual harassment. The course changes each year but generally highlights city landmarks. This year, riders assembled in the city’s large Fairmount Park, some getting themselves adorned with body paint, before starting a 12-mile (19 kilometer) rou...

German Woman Poses as Empress of Made-up Kingdom to Mingle with Italian Socialites

Image
A 49-year-old German woman who had been posing as the empress of a non-existent kingdom and rubbing shoulders with Italy’s elite had been accidentally unmasked as a fraud. Sandra Nicole Martinez, who had adorned herself with titles like ‘Her Royal Highness’ or ‘Her Imperial Highness”, had become a regular at exclusive parties and social events in Italy’s capital city after being introduced to them by legendary Italian socialite Guya Sospisio a few years ago. Apparently, no one questioned her claims of being the Empress of the Imperial House of Glodeni, a royal house with headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon, even though a simple Google search would have revealed that Glodeni is actually a town in the tiny Eastern European country of Moldova. Martinez was eventually unmasked as a fraudster completely by accident. Read More from Oddity Central – Collecting Oddities https://ift.tt/M540Kpc

Sam Sam the Kittycat Man ran away. Thanks to a microchip, he was found close by — 11 years later

After Sam Sam the Kittycat Man disappeared 11 years ago, Jennifer Ravenel couldn't hold another cat in her lap. Her heart never could overcome the loss of that feral kitten she had rescued from the crook of a tree on her South Carolina farm. But Sam is now back in Ravenel's lap, thanks to her decision to have a microchip put in him. Charleston County Animal Control found Sam this month, skinny and feeding off scraps from a feral colony less than a mile from Ravenel's home. His microchip was scanned, and Ravenel got a nearly unbelievable phone call. “I really though y’all were playing a prank on me, because it couldn’t be possible. But this is a miracle in itself," Ravenel told workers at the Charleston Animal Society. They guided Ravenel to a room where Sam was in a cage. She cried as soon as she saw him. “Sam, Sam the Kittycat Man! I’m missed you so much! 11 years!" she said. Once everyone was sure Sam was OK, Ravenel got to hold her lap kitty again. She sq...

Large desert tortoise rescued from Arizona highway after escaping from ostrich ranch 3 miles away

PICACHO, Ariz. (AP) — How long does it take a large desert tortoise to get to the other side of a southern Arizona highway? It’s still a mystery, after a state Department of Public Safety trooper recently helped rescue an escaped sulcata tortoise that was attempting to cross Interstate 10 near Picacho. A motorist contacted authorities on July 30 to report a tortoise trying to cross the busy highway that's halfway between Casa Grande and Tucson in Pinal County. The motorist and DPS Sgt. Steven Sekrecki managed to get the tortoise off the roadway unharmed. Troopers saw the name “Stitch” labeled across the tortoise’s shell and contacted an ostrich ranch that was 3 miles away. According to the Arizona Republic, the ranch confirmed Stitch was one of their resident tortoises and had recently escaped from his habitat. The newspaper said Stitch was then safely returned to the ranch. from Weird News | KETK.com | FOX51.com https://ift.tt/CZrDsMg

Mystery of fossilised ‘alien fish taco’ finally solved 500 million years on

Image
The mystery of this bizarre sea creature has been solved (Picture: Pen News) Scientists think they’ve finally solved the mystery of one of the strangest sea creatures ever discovered. Nicknamed the ‘ alien fish taco’, the Odaraia is a bit of an oddity with its large eyes, taco-like shell, and tail resembling the rudder of a submarine. But a new study has found two mandibles on Odaraia fossils – which makes it one of the earliest ancestors of the majority of animal species on Earth today. A mere 500 million years since the creature prowled our oceans, evolutionary biologist Alejandro Izquierdo-López led the study which discovered the Odaraia’s weird biology. Alejandro, from the University of Toronto, explained: ‘Odaraia is an arthropod, an animal not very different from a crab or a shrimp. ‘It has a pair of large eyes, a couple of “jaws” on its mouth, and a long body with almost 30 pairs of legs. Just one of dozens of Odaraia fossils discovered in British Columbia (Picture:...

Investigation: Facebook and Instagram Still Running Ads for Illegal Drugs

The 7ft tall dinosaur statue that is so big you can see it on Google Maps

Image
Matthew Riddell-Rovira had an unusual idea for a birthday present (Picture: Kennedy News Media) From passersby making rude gestures to a cute cat hanging out at some Roman ruins, Google Maps have captured all sorts of weird and wonderful sights while sending their camera cars out to create its Street View feature. But how many times have you come across a 7ft tall dinosaur while checking out your old street or hometown? This particular metal dinosaur statue is 12ft long, and it’s been featured on Google Maps since it was installed outside Miola, a homeware shop in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire in 2022. Shop owner Louise Metcalfe dressed the dinosaur up for special occasions, including a Santa hat during Christmas , and poppy adornments to mark Remembrance Day. But Louise is in the process of closing down Miola to wind down for her retirement – which meant her huge dinosaur needs a new home. Chicken parade prompts changes to proposed restrictions in Iowa's capital city

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s capital city is establishing a new pecking order for backyard chickens and roosters after some of their diehard fans paraded around City Hall with some of their flocks on Monday. City Manager Scott Sanders said in a statement issued Friday evening that he thinks the city can find a way to amend the proposed restrictions so they will “better serve the whole community,” including chicken owners. The proposal that got preliminary approval from the city council would have cut the number of birds allowed from 30 to 12 and ban the roosters that are disturbing the peace in some neighborhoods. Chicken parade organizer Ed Fallon said the city seemed to be overreacting to a total of three complaints about chickens that were registered between the start of 2020 and June 2024. A small group of people holding chickens came out Monday to march from the Statehouse to City Hall. Sanders said he asked Assistant City Manager Malcolm Hankins to draft an amendment that wi...
